Construction Safety Officer

Burnaby, BC

THE ROLE


Acting as the key catalyst in bringing ETRO Construction’s health and safety compliance and leadership to life, the Occupational Health & Safety Coordinator acts as the primary safety representative on site. A qualified individual skilled in spotting, controlling and training onsite team members on potential risks, the Safety Coordinator’s primary role is to help create safer construction sites and establish a culture of health and safety stewardship across every ETRO Construction project.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES


Here’s what you’ll get up to as the Occupational Health & Safety Coordinator:

  • Involved in engraining safety culture in the company.
  • Support the development of site-specific OHS policies and programs.
  • Conduct work area inspections to ensure equipment, materials, and processes do not present a safety, health or environmental hazard.
  • Lead site-specific Health & Safety Orientations.
  • Assist site management and employees with safety programs, participation and compliance.
  • Advise and instruct on various safety-related topics (noise levels, use of machinery etc.).
  • Conduct risk assessments and enforce preventative measures.
  • Review existing policies and measures; update according to legislation.
  • Inspect premises and the work of personnel to identify issues or non-conformity (e.g. not using protective equipment).
  • Stop any unsafe acts or processes that seem dangerous or unhealthy.
  • Investigate and document injuries to determine root causes and implement controls.
  • Assist in the incident investigation process when necessary; be involved in the preparation of reports and summaries.
  • Maintain and track all recordable statistics, training requirements for project-specific needs.
  • Attend applicable safety meetings including toolbox talks where required.
  • Assist with the development and review of job hazard assessments (JHA), Safe Work Practices (SWP) and Safe Job Procedures (SJP).

SKILLS / EXPERIENCE


On top of your passion to work in a growing business full of professionals in the trade, here’s what we’re looking for:

  • 3+ years of general construction experience.
  • 5+ years of Health and Safety work experience in the construction industry.
  • Experience working on multi-family and mid-rise construction projects with significant public interface.
  • Completion of a degree/diploma of an accredited Certificate program in Occupational Health and Safety an asset.
  • A solid understanding of the OH&S regulations for the province of BC.
  • Motivated to obtain or currently working towards NCSO Certification.
  • Current First Aid certificate, Level 2 minimum.
  • Proficiency with computers, including word processing, spreadsheets, email and other common applications.
  • Human relations training (i.e. Conflict Resolution, etc.); confident ability to diffuse challenging situations.
  • Additional training including Fall Protection, Rescue/Confined spaces, Bobcat/mobile equipment operation an asset.
