Design Director
As a Design Director working in the Alternative Projects Centre of Expertise (APEX) team at Pomerleau Construction, you will play a pivotal role driving collaboration as it relates to complex project designs. Working on large-scale building and infrastructure projects – ranging from $1.5 million to upwards of $1 billion – you will have the opportunity to provide guidance, port and assistance to ensure collaboration with our Project Managers and support consultants from concept through to construction.
What You Will Do
- Manage and lead a team of Design Managers and Design Coordinators, establish and update a resource plan based on projects needs, assign the resources to fulfill the plan and proceed with hirings if needed.
- Ensure the professional development of the team and the presence of the required technical expertise.
- As soon as the opportunity is identified, take part in the project development strategy, in collaboration with the APEX pre-construction team, particularly in the choice of consultants, their scopes and schedules, the preparation of agreements and the negotiation of their fees.
- Develop the organization structure, the design management plan and the budget for the design management team involved in proposals and projects, all in conjunction with the project team.
- Foster connections with the Estimation Team, Procurement Team and Construction Team, especially during the various relevant stages of the project.
- Promote the use within the design management team of common processes, procedures, tools and templates, and propose improvements based on experiences carried out.
- Actively participate in the design management community of practice within the Technical Office.
- When specifically involved in the design management process on a project, carry out the role of the Design Manager i.e. development of concepts with the consultants, BIM management, optimization of the design, value engineering, constructability, design reviews and quality control, technical coordination, compliance analysis, design workshops with client and end-users, design schedule and milestones, evaluation of design progress, change management, design risk analysis, progress reports, etc.
This role could be for you if you have
- A Bachelor’s degree in architecture or engineering.
- A membership of a professional regulating body (OAA or PEO).
- At least 15 years of professional experience on major projects in design and project management, including at least 5 years in a similar role.
- Experience on various institutional and light industrial building projects, especially the ones with architectural complexities, sophisticated systems and/or environmental issues, and delivered through Design & Build, Public-Private-Partnership (P3) or other alternative contractual modes that include design.
- A mix of design experience (A&E firms), construction experience (general or specialty contractors) and relevant experience in operations management is considered an asset.
- Demonstration of initiative, innovation, discipline and leadership in the planning and development of design concepts.
- Familiarity with Building Information Modeling-Virtual Design Construction (BIM-VDC) models.
