Director, Program Services

North Vancouver, BC

Vancouver Shipyards is looking for an experienced, entrepreneurial business leader to establish and grow a Program Services business line within Seaspan Shipyards – namely custom services based on Seaspan’s Program Management, Engineering, Supply Chain and Planning capabilities.


Reporting to both the SVP Strategy, BD and Comms and Chief Program Officer, your primary role will be to lead the “start-up” of a Program Services business at Seaspan. While the primary role will be growth of the business, you will also lead the business definition, growth, execution, and program management activities while providing leadership to multi-disciplinary, multi-departmental teams responsible for winning and executing multiple projects to successfully meet revenue growth and profitability targets.


You will also be responsible for holding senior customer relationships, interfacing and engaging with the Seaspan organization, managing program budgets, developing and managing both dedicated and shared qualified and capable resources, and reporting financial and program performance to the Seaspan Shipyards executive team.


Note: Due to business needs, this position is mostly required to be fully on-site based at 2 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.


What You'll Do

  • Initiates, sets, and achieves goals for the Program Services business line that align to the overall growth strategy of Seaspan Shipyards.
  • Owns, develops, maintains, gains approval for and implements the overall Program Services strategy for Seaspan.
  • Works closely, in a tightly integrated, collaborative manner, with the Seaspan Strategy and Business Development team to develop and win new business.
  • Develops and approves budgets and holds profit and loss accountability for the business line and each constituent project within the business line.
  • Works closely with the existing project teams, engineering, supply chain, planning, operations, quality, contracts, legal, etc. to bid and then execute Program Services contracts.
  • Sets up, resources, and oversees future contracts secured within the Program Services business line.
  • Leadership and motivation of multiple cross-discipline integrated project teams comprised of project managers, engineers, ISS and ILS specialists, and project support staff, including direct management responsibility of staff assigned to project manage individual Program Services projects.
  • Interface with and coordination with other parts of the Seaspan organization (e.g. Engineering, Project Management, Supply Chain, Planning, Operations & Quality) when additional resources or other support is required.
  • In consultation with senior management, leads the definition and implementation of a Program Services operating model that is adapted and sized to meet the maturity and requirements of the Program Services business line.


What You'll Bring

  • Relevant Bachelor's degree, preferably in Business Management subject area, or similar experience in a technical services and/or system integration business.
  • At least 10 years of experience in a business leadership position, with demonstrated increased levels of responsibility and a particular focus on experience leading growth-oriented, customer-focused businesses.
  • Demonstrated people leadership skills and strong teamwork skills enabling success in a matrixed organization.
  • Detailed understanding of strategic planning and new business development.
  • Detailed understanding of program management techniques and methods.
  • Demonstrated experience managing people and significant budgets.
  • Familiar with Government and commercial contracting processes.
  • Leadership – ability to create a vision, communicate it broadly and motivate a multi-facetted team.
  • Strong team player and ability to interface to different parts of the organization in a constructive, effective manner.
  • Self-starter with excellent communications and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently to develop solutions to complex technical problems.
  • Strong communication skills including verbal, written, listening and presentation.
  • Good organizational and conflict resolution skills.
  • Availability and willingness to travel as needed.
  • Committed to a high standard of safety and able to align with all safety laws and all of the employer's safety policies and rules.
  • Exercise good judgments and make decisions in a manner consistent with the essential job functions.

The estimated salary for this position is $166,500 - $203,500. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate’s skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
