Position Overview

Join us as the Indigenous Relations Manager and you’ll be part of the Community and Indigenous Relations team supporting the Eagle Mountain-Woodfibre Gas Pipeline (EGP) Project . This project involves adding 50 kilometres of new gas pipeline between Coquitlam and Squamish. We anticipate construction for the project will begin in late August with initial construction activities beginning in Squamish.
As an Indigenous Relations Manager, you’ll navigate the challenges, complexities, and opportunities of a major project in British Columbia by using your interpersonal skills to build, maintain and strengthen our relationships with Indigenous communities. You’ll enact our Statement of Indigenous Principles to support the development and execution of FortisBC’s projects and initiatives.
This work includes implementing regulatory and project agreement commitments, as well as listening, learning, and incorporating community knowledge into the project. The work also includes building genuine relationships that will last into the future, beyond the project.
In this role, you will:
- Develop strategic engagement plans and provide guidance to project managers and leadership.
- Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to implement strategies to respect the interests and priorities of Indigenous communities.
- Brief senior management on issues, performance reporting, and provide recommendations.
- Establish and maintain relationships with Indigenous community leaders and communities-at-large.
- Collaborate and provide mentorship to other members of the Indigenous Relations team.
- Implement project agreements to ensure that commitments are achieved.
- Understand the goals of our projects and initiatives and become an integral part of the team by building open, honest and respectful relationships.
- Set up our projects and initiatives for success by developing strategic plans, gathering input on project plans from Indigenous communities, and building mutually beneficial partnerships.
- Walk-the-talk through implementing existing environmental and economic agreements.
What it takes:
- A bachelor’s degree in business administration, communications or other related disciplines from a recognized program.
- Minimum of 5 years of Indigenous Relations experience working on a project of similar size and nature.
- Demonstrated ability and knowledge to complete applications and obtain permits through British Columbia regulatory agencies, (e.g. BC Utilities Commission, BC Environmental Assessment Office, BC Energy Regulator).
- Ability to manage issue related conflicts and issue resolution capacity (negotiation skills).
- Ability to meet firm deadlines with minimal supervision.
- Project management expertise and balancing competing priorities.
- Comfortable delivering presentations and navigating challenging conversations.
- Ability to assert interests with competing perspectives.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with a panache for team-building.
- Ability to develop and maintain productive working relationships representatives from levels of government.
- Demonstrated Indigenous relations experience with communities in British Columbia.
What you need to know:
- Position may require evening and weekend work.
- Travel between Surrey, Coquitlam, and Squamish will be required.
In this role, you will have the option to participate in a flexible work program, enabling you to work from an approved flex location in British Columbia up to 85 days a year (equivalent to approximately two days a week), subject to business or operational needs.
