Operations Director - Civil Ontario

Mississauga, ON

Reporting directly to the Vice-President of Civil Operations - Central Canada, the incumbent will assume the responsibility and leadership of all construction activities in the GTA region. They will be expected to support the ongoing growth of the EBC Civil Division. It will therefore be a benefit to have some basic knowledge and experience of business management and team leadership.


As Director of Operations, you will work closely with Project Management teams to plan, organize, and control the project resources, while respecting specific budgets and deadlines. It will also be their responsibility to manage the relationships with the existing and prospective clients in the GTA (i.e. Metrolinx, TTC, CoT, Region of Peel, York Region, TRCA, Waterfront Toronto, Etc.). They will also be expected to build and maintain relationships with key partners; either other general contractors who are/could be joint venture partner and/or consultants who we will work with either as a design partner or as Construction Administrator(s).


To do this, you will coordinate, in collaboration with the project team, the human and material resource requirements for the execution of the work. You will ensure administrative follow-up and will be involved in relations with subcontractors, customers, and partners. You will professionally supervise and support the superintendents and coordinate the human and material resources required to carry out the department's projects.


Finally, you will take on various management activities to support the management team. The incumbent will also play a coaching and mentoring role with the division's developing talent in terms of site management and technical knowledge.


The efforts of the Operations Director will contribute towards the goal of leading EBC Ontario to become a major projects leader in the province.


Job Duties And Responsibilities


Operational management


  • Diligently and keenly work with the company's internal departments.
  • Lead and manage project teams in seeking and completing challenging projects.
  • Manage project objectives and financial statuses.
  • Create and promote team synergy in a collaborative environment.
  • Effectively manage conflicts and solve complex problems.
  • Read the contractual documents, and attend meetings with clients and professionals, as well as subcontractors, as needed.
  • Sign contracts with subcontractors, in accordance with submitted budgets.
  • Review client contracts according to company procedures and policies
  • Identify the contentious points that may affect the profitability and/or schedule of a project. discuss with the VP, if necessary, in order to apply the necessary corrective actions.
  • Visit sites regularly, note the necessary corrective measures and discuss them with the project management team.
  • Ensure the quality standard required by the contract documents.
  • Oversee workload and ensure appropriate use of resources.
  • Apply the tasks required by our ISO and EBC quality control program.
  • Actively participate in project constructability analysis.
  • Oversee efficient transfer of information between the Proposals department and construction teams.
  • Ensure the competence of our workforce, the sound management and optimization of processes and facilities on our sites.
  • Successfully assess and manage risks throughout construction of our projects.
  • Oversee procedure compliance.
  • Optimize processes.
  • Collaborate with management to develop short- and long-term strategic plans for the organization around the growth and development of construction.
  • Oversee quality management implementation and monitoring.
  • Promote team spirit amongst work colleagues, offices, and job sites.

Business Development


  • Establish and maintain strategic business relationships with customers, suppliers, and other stakeholders.
  • Seek advanced knowledge of upcoming projects and strategically plan business alliances (team, association, exclusivity, etc.).
  • Lead, collaborate and/or develop offer of services and proposals.
  • Possess strong interviewing and business development skills with potential customers.
  • Identify and assist by leading new business opportunities, presentations, attending client conferences and dinners.


Requirements


  • 15+ years’ experience in the construction industry.
  • Previous civil experience specifically in heavy civil with client such as Metrolinx, Infrastructure Ontario, OPG, and City of Toronto.
  • University Degree/Technology Diploma in Engineering, or a combination of education and industry experience.
  • A proven track record of project success and team leadership.
  • Strong knowledge of infrastructure such as: Infrastructures, grade separation, bridges, dams, storm water management pond, in-water work, trackwork and grading.
  • Good knowledge in geology and geotechnical.
  • Strong experience delivering large scale projects within a partnership environment.
  • Strong experience with alternative delivery mode projects (Design Build, P3)
  • Strong knowledge of financial management, as well as building codes and associated legislation.
  • Good computer skills and previous experience with scheduling software.
  • Frequent travel is required.
