PROJECT DIRECTOR, FIELD SERVICES


We are looking for a Project Director, Field Services for our Cambridge, Ontario facility (in-office or Hybrid).


JOB PURPOSE


This position manages the technical, cost, schedule and customer interface requirements of Bruce Power MCR LILO. Responsible for the achievement of results individually and through the direct supervision of project management professionals. Ensures the company's resources are properly directed for satisfactory contract execution. Responsible for all project phases including proposal, pre-deployment, execution and close out. Expected to work in the field, at Bruce Power.


JOB STRUCTURE AND COMMUNICATIONS


Job Structure


  • This job reports to the Field Services Project Management Manager and Highland Joint Venture Executive Steering Committee.
  • Joint Venture Project Managers report into this position.
  • Leads large complex multi-discipline teams including partners and sub-contractors.


Communication


  • Regularly reports project progress to senior management and the customer senior management.
  • Regular external communication with senior management representatives from both clients and third-party organizations (i.e. suppliers, sub-contractors, partners, etc.).
  • Communications can be contentious and difficult requiring advanced diplomacy and negotiating skills with internal and external parties.
  • Creates and maintains positive communication within own direct reporting employees.


ACCOUNTABILITIES


  • Analyzes the requirements with the customer, determines the strategy and develops the execution plan for the project.
  • Leads the successful performance and results of MCR LILO.
  • Manages contract deliverables, payments and claims within the bounds of the contract language.
  • Develops detailed constructability reviews; execution plans; strategic implementation approaches; readiness/challenge reviews.
  • Analyzes the requirements with the customer and develops the execution plan for the project.
  • Directs the overall technical, cost and schedule requirements on assigned contracts.
  • Interfaces with customer to ensure that contract requirements are met including cost/schedule reporting, multi-phase design reviews and other engineering deliverables.
  • Takes corrective action as necessary to ensure compliance with technical specifications and schedule commitments.
  • Coordinates subcontracting efforts to ensure that any outsourced work scopes meet all technical requirements.
  • Leads negotiation of complex contract changes or claims and resolves any technical and/or commercial issues with customers and subcontractors.
  • Defines/designs activities (starting from existing solutions), and roles/responsibilities for project team members for unique requirements of the project. Formulates business case in support of deviations and exceptions.
  • Deals with complex change management including claim management, bonus/penalty clauses (with significant risk).
  • Full accountability for the successful delivery and implementation of subcontracted work.
  • Leads teams comprised of construction trades, engineering, technicians, sub-contractors, project planners/cost estimators, and QA/QC at nuclear utilities.
  • Provides effective leadership through communicating expectations and instilling accountability.
  • Develops growth opportunities in Construction business line.
  • Develops proposals for Construction projects and leads technical and commercial negotiations.
  • Contributes to improving/developing systems, and with setting project evaluation parameters to improve profitability.
  • Consulted as an expert by others when issues arise.
  • Leads the work of direct reporting employees. Has full authority for personnel decisions and may have some impact on departmental budgeting, planning, and procedural change.
  • Ensures compliance to all labour, human rights, safety, and environmental regulations and associated company policies.
  • Successfully manages a team of other professional project management employees.
  • Establishes and develops effective project teams.
  • Ensures safety is an integral component of all construction planning and processes.
  • Follows all safety policies and procedures and ensures the same of direct reports. This includes wearing appropriate personal protective equipment in required areas.
  • Responsible for employee relations which includes, but is not limited to, hiring, work direction, mentoring, coaching, disciplining and the identification of training needs for employees.
  • Ensures all employees are suitably trained/qualified/licensed for the various tasks and jobs they must complete.
  • Sets a positive example by maintaining a respectful attitude, cooperating with co-workers, management, and internal and external customers.
  • Available to reside at off-site construction client facilities for extended periods.
  • Additional travel requirements to other client, vendor or head office locations.


QUALIFICATIONS


  • BSc in Engineering or equivalent.
  • PMP designation or equivalent experience is an asset.
  • Must have CANDU experience.
  • Ability to grasp comprehensive knowledge of the company's policies, procedures, and practices. Performs complex tasks.
  • Advanced understanding of construction project management principles and practices acquired through 15 to 20 years related experience.
  • Advanced experience and excellent knowledge of (typically 15 - 20 years):
  • Working closely with and managing unionized construction trades.
  • Relationship building skills and the ability to effectively impact and influence.
  • Contract management experience with sophisticated buyers such as nuclear utilities.
  • Negotiating skills and communication (both written and spoken) and presentation abilities.
  • Contractual Terms & Conditions.
  • Leadership skills including planning, delegation, driving accountability.
  • Customer relationship management.
  • Performing cost-benefit analysis on a variety of situations and recommending competitive solutions to problems not otherwise being contemplated.
  • Financial and business acumen.
  • Complicated and non-standard commercial arrangements including cash flows, risk/reward scenarios, Monte Carlo risk studies, incentive and disincentive models, etc.
  • Error or omission identification, or missing items required to fully define a commercial model.
  • EV methodology application.
  • Managing and understanding complexities of various customer relationships.
  • Competition, subcontract base, and underlying strategy behind various contracts and partnerships.
  • Chairing and directing relevant meetings to emphasize focus on performance.
  • Standard commercial models across a number of different projects and programs.
  • Independently identifies the need and is able to effectively prepare ad hoc business and project analysis to identify and communicate performance or issues on a project.
  • Can independently defend financial status and issues on an assigned project to PM, management and customers.
  • Strong change management skills, able to handle deliverables when managing changes.
  • Perform all required company and customer processes to establish performance measurement baselines for the assigned projects/ program.
  • Self-motivated to seek opportunities to update and improve project, program. Regularly makes such suggestions or implements when able and feels there is need.
  • Able to clearly distill down and organize complex projects into clear action lists.
  • Must be well organized, detail oriented and have strong problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and within tight schedules.
  • Understands management and customer priorities.
  • Understands and able to quantify project risks.
  • Conveys a diplomatic/professional demeanor at all times and has a strong customer centric focus.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently but comfortable working in a team environment.
  • Must be a team player, keen learner and a willing mentor.
