Position Overview

Estimators at Kiewit's Western Canada District develop accurate and competitive cost estimates in diverse sectors including civil infrastructure, utilities, and transportation. This role requires a proactive approach to estimate development, a collaborative spirit, and a deep understanding of Kiewit’s commitment to delivering safe, high-quality, and cost-efficient solutions for our clients.

Location

This position is based full-time in our Winnipeg Regional Office. Travel to sites may be required. #LI-RP1

Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed cost estimates in alignment with Kiewit’s estimating practices and methodologies by analyzing project plans, specifications, and scopes, while utilizing historical data and current/future market conditions.
  • Perform precise quantity take-offs for labor, materials, and equipment using estimating software, ensuring all estimates are accurate and competitive.
  • Identify and quantify potential risks in project designs and estimate contingency as necessary, in alignment with Kiewit’s risk management framework.
  • Engage with and evaluate subcontractor and supplier proposals, ensuring alignment with Kiewit standards and incorporating their inputs into the estimate.
  • Collaborate with project teams to assess value engineering options that maintain quality and reduce costs, presenting alternative construction approaches where possible.
  • Play a key role in the bid process by supporting bid reviews, assembling bid packages, and providing estimate presentations for senior management.
  • Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and procurement teams to ensure estimates accurately reflect project requirements and logistical considerations.
  • Stay current on industry best practices, emerging technologies, and Kiewit’s estimating methodologies to improve estimate quality and accuracy.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in construction estimating for major projects, heavy civil infrastructure, utilities, or other large and complex construction projects. 
  • Proficiency with HCSS Heavybid and/or Hard Dollar (InEight) and other estimating software.
  • Strong ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, and relevant documentation.
  • Knowledge of cost databases, pricing structures, and market trends.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with an ability to prepare estimates for complex projects.
  • High level of accuracy in cost estimations, with the capability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills for cross-functional teamwork and client presentations.
