Position Summary:


You are a strategist, relationship builder and wordsmith. You have a deep knowledge of working in a regulated industry and thrive in a fast-paced, results driven environment. With a background in strategic communications, public affairs and government relations, you are a critical thinker who is comfortable advising senior leaders on emerging political, legislative and regulatory developments, as well as public opinion trends, and setting a strategy to respond.


As the VP of Corporate Affairs, you will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to build and maintain our corporate reputation, enhance our community partnerships and enhance employee experience through strong communications. You will lead our integrated external and employee communications, including marketing and communications, public affairs, media relations, government relations, community investment and community and stakeholder engagement.


Based in Vancouver and reporting to the Senior Vice President, Global Business Development, you will work closely and collaborate with the leadership team to ensure corporate affairs are aligned with corporate goals and strategic operating plans.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Develop and implement government relations strategies to effectively identify and influence public policy impacting the corporation, and develop and deliver a proactive public affairs and advocacy strategy that deepens connections and helps influence key external stakeholders.
  • Work closely with senior leaders to provide strategic guidance.
  • Analyze the impact of government decisions and public sentiment; identifying emerging risks and opportunities that could impact the organization’s reputation or operations.
  • Implement strategies to enhance and protect the corporate brand and reputation through external communications, including social and digital media.
  • Oversee the internal communications program to drive employee engagement and deliver on internal initiatives across the business.
  • Track political, legislative and regulatory developments, as well as public opinion trends, and provide regular updates and strategic recommendations to leadership.
  • Proactively engage and foster relationships with industry, stakeholder and media contacts to stay informed and connected to relevant current trends and potential changes in the political and social environments in which Canfor operates.
  • Lead Canfor’s media relations activities by providing strategic advice on media strategy, identifying opportunities that will drive proactive media coverage for company activities, and acting as company spokesperson.
  • Lead, mentor and develop collaborative team of marketing and communications professionals, providing direction, assignments of work, and performance management.


Required Skills & Education


  • University degree with emphasis in communications, political science, business, economics, public policy administration, or a related field.
  • More than 15 years in the field of government affairs, public policy, communications and/or public affairs.
  • Deep knowledge of government operations, legislative and legislature procedures and the public policy process.
  • Proven experience providing strategic counsel to senior executives, and ability to influence and persuade across all levels of the organization.


Skills And Abilities


  • Strong leadership skills and dedication to mentorship that sets the tone for and cultivates a high-performing team.
  • Proven experience developing corporate affairs strategies, providing strategic guidance to senior executives, working with business units and managing team effectively to achieve corporate goals.
  • Impeccable verbal and written communications skills essential.
  • Expertise with digital communications is an asset.
  • Active listener, facilitator, and strong relationship manager.
  • Manage multiple activities against aggressive timelines.
  • Previous experience with forest industry and/or natural resources industry considered an asset.


The salary range for this position is: $220,000- $260,000
