Vice President, Mineral Resources - Lucara Diamond Corp.
Lead the evaluation of opportunities that create significant value for Lucara Diamond Corp., part of the Lundin Group of Companies.
The Karowe diamond mine, located in Botswana, is a state-of-the-art mine which was fully commissioned in Q2 2012. Karowe, which means precious stone in the local language, is a large-scale asset with tonnage and throughput upside and is one of world’s foremost producers of large, high quality, Type IIA diamonds in excess of 10.8 carats, including the historic 1,758 Sewelô, the 1,109 carat Lesedi La Rona and the 813 carat Constellation.
As the VP, Mineral Resources for Lucara Diamond Corp., you will play a pivotal role in overseeing the strategic direction and management of our mineral resources division, shaping the future of our mining operations, and contributing to our ongoing success in the global diamond market.
Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), you will be responsible for developing and executing strategies to optimize the exploration (at some time in the future), extraction, and management of diamond deposits. Your leadership will drive efficiency, sustainability, and profitability within our mineral resources operations and you will be instrumental in unlocking the full potential of our mineral resources portfolio while upholding the highest standards of safety, sustainability, and responsible mining practices.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Strategic Planning:
- Develop long-term strategies for mineral resource exploration, development, and production to ensure sustainable supply and competitive advantage.
- Conduct thorough analysis of geological data, market trends, and regulatory requirements to inform strategic decision-making.
- Collaborate with executive management to align mineral resource strategies with overall corporate objectives and financial targets.
2. Exploration and Development
- Lead exploration programs to identify and evaluate new diamond deposits, utilizing cutting-edge technologies and geological expertise, as the underground mine matures.
- Oversee feasibility studies and resource estimation processes to assess the economic viability and potential of new mining projects.
- Manage relationships with regulatory authorities, local communities, and stakeholders to secure exploration permits and approvals.
3. Operations Management:
- Direct and coordinate mining operations, ensuring adherence to safety, environmental, and quality standards.
- Implement best practices for resource extraction, processing, and recovery to maximize yield and minimize operational costs.
- Monitor production metrics, analyze performance data, and implement continuous improvement initiatives to optimize operational efficiency.
- Co-ordinate and manage diamond price book information, monitor sales data and have input in the final diamond sales mechanisms.
4. Resource Modeling and Reserves Management:
- Develop comprehensive geological models and mineral reserve estimates to guide resource planning and investment decisions.
- Conduct regular reviews and audits of mineral reserves, complying with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
- Assess the impact of mining activities on resource depletion, reserve replacement, and long-term sustainability.
5. Team Leadership and Development:
- Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of geologists, and technical professionals.
- Provide leadership, guidance, and support to empower team members and foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence.
- Conduct performance evaluations, set goals, and provide ongoing training to enhance the skills and capabilities of the mineral resources team.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Bachelor's degree in Geology, Mining Engineering, or related field; advanced degree (e.g., Master's or PhD) preferred.
- Proven experience (10+ years) in mineral resources management, with a focus on diamond exploration and mining.
- Strong technical expertise in geological modeling, resource estimation, and mining operations.
- In-depth knowledge of diamond geology, ore body characteristics, and mineral processing techniques.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities, with a track record of successfully managing multidisciplinary teams and complex projects.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
- Proficiency in relevant software applications for geological modeling, resource evaluation, and mine planning.
- Understanding of regulatory frameworks, environmental regulations, and industry best practices in mineral resources management.
- Ability to travel internationally and regular travel to the site; twice per quarter.
- Fluent verbal and written English language skills.
