Vice President, Construction


Position Description:

We are currently looking for a highly skilled, caring, and safety focused individual for our Buttcon East Team. Reporting to the President & CEO, the Vice President of Construction, is a Senior Executive responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of construction projects within the organization. The VP of Construction will collaborate with various departments, stakeholders, and external partners to achieve the company's construction objectives, promote operational efficiency, and maintain the organization's reputation for delivering top-quality projects.


Here’s What You’ll be Responsible for:


Strategic Planning:

  • Develop and implement construction strategies that align with the company's overall goals and vision. Create long-term plans for project execution, resource allocation, and growth in the construction department.
  • Advise on Labour and Superintendent training programs.
  • Responsible for the succession planning in Construction and Safety Departments.


Project Management:

  • Oversee the planning, budgeting, scheduling, and execution of construction projects from inception to completion. Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the expected quality standards.
  • Review all final billing, and schedules regarding maintaining and development (pre-construction).


Team Leadership:

  • Manage and provide leadership to the construction team. Foster a positive work culture, encourage professional development, and ensure high employee morale.
  • Consult on all matters regarding General Superintendents, Site Superintendents, and the Safety Department.
  • Meet with General Superintendents and Safety Manager weekly to review sites, staff, and updates on any issues.
  • Conduct annual staff reviews for both Safety and Construction Departments, including site trade partners, and Superintendent Safety Stats.


Risk Management:

  • Identify potential risks and challenges in construction projects and implement effective risk management strategies. Mitigate project risks to maintain a safe and compliant work environment.


Staffing:

  • Work closely with the HR Department to oversee the hiring, assignment, and development of staff to create a high performing team.
  • Identify staffing needs, and manage selection for the Construction and Safety Departments.


Budgeting and Cost Control:

  • Develop and manage construction budgets, monitor expenses, and implement cost-saving measures without compromising quality and safety.
  • Review all site Purchase Orders, Billings, large purchases for site, and sign all trade supplier payments.
  • Oversee all business regarding rental companies and assist in the negotiation of pricing and damages.


Regulatory Compliance:

  • Stay up-to-date with local, provincial, and federal regulations related to construction, building codes, safety standards, and environmental guidelines. Ensure projects adhere to all relevant compliance requirements.
  • Accountable for all site and office safety.
  • Oversees all union related matters and attends all Union Conferences and CBA meetings.


Quality Assurance:

  • Help establish and maintain quality control processes to deliver construction projects of the highest standard. Implement quality assurance checks and ensure adherence to industry best practices.


Stakeholder Communication:

  • Maintain effective communication with internal and external stakeholders, including company executives, clients, investors, and government authorities. Provide project updates, address concerns, and manage expectations.
  • Attend Management and Director Meetings as required, prepare for each meeting with reports and safety updates.
  • Collaborate and meet with Vice President of Operations on a regular basis to review issues, staffing, and legal matters, as required.
  • Attend Consultants and Owner meetings, as required.
  • Negotiate deals with the Consultant or Owners, as required.


Technology and Innovation:

  • Keep abreast of emerging construction technologies and innovative practices to improve project efficiency and reduce costs. Implement appropriate technology solutions to streamline processes.

Qualification Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Civil/Construction/Architectural) or Construction Management is an asset. An equivalent combination of technical training and/or related experience is required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in the ICI construction industry, in a management role is required.
  • Knowledge of all aspects of construction (technology, equipment, methods), industry practices, estimating/budgeting and scheduling.
  • Strong understanding and adherence to safety standards
  • Gold Seal Certified an asset
  • LEED Accredited an asset
  • Well Accredited is an asset
  • Computer literate, including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Microsoft Project.
  • Knowledge of Suretrak, Primavera P3 or P6, E-Builder Project Management Software, Procore, or BIM software knowledge is an asset.
  • Primary work location in the Head Office
  • Travel to construction sites is anticipated.
  • Exposure to construction work site environment in all seasons
